Fuel for hiking

Hiking in the Lake District is one of my favourite things to do. I took Amber (my puppy) on a new adventure recently, to an area I’d not visited before – Cartmel. We were lucky to have amazing weather and a plan to finish our walk at the Royal Oak. As we were setting off from Brighton, I had to plan my meals and snacks carefully so that I would have enough energy throughout the day.

This is something I get asked about a lot. Eating well whilst on the go can be tricky, especially if there isn’t a plan in place. It is possible to eat healthily whilst travelling though. Just a little time to prepare everything is all that’s needed and an idea of where you’ll be having dinner and what’s on the menu. Hydration is also essential so always pack a bit bottle of water or know where you can get regular top ups. Most of us need at least 2 litres of water or more, depending on how active you are.

I always start my day with a decent breakfast. A good balance of protein, essential fat and complex carbs – scrambled eggs, smoked salmon, steamed broccoli and strawberries. I also added a piece of whole grain toast to this. It might seem odd to add broccoli to breakfast but a serving of greens in our first meal of the day is an excellent way to boost energy levels and add extra fibre to feel fuller for longer.

I prepared a packed lunch to take on the train with me. I chose ingredients that were quick to throw together and provide an optimal balance of nutrients, just like at breakfast – feta cheese, mixed leaves, tomatoes, chives and a pot of vinaigrette. I use Farrington’s classic vinaigrette. I added wholemeal pitta bread to that.

Snacks are essential when you’re on the go and want to keep your energy levels topped up. For convenience, I like the oat bars by Deliciously Ella and always pair these with fresh fruit, something portable like apples or pears and a pot of natural yoghurt. My favourite yoghurt is Yeo Valley natural.

So adequately fuelled and Amber too, we set off on our hike from Cark, through Holker and along the way to Cartmel. It was so peaceful and a very easy walk, passing farms, rolling fields and valleys. When we arrived in Cartmel, at the Royal Oak, the sun was still shining. A perfect opportunity to sit in the pub garden and enjoy a glass of wine with the best Shepherd’s pie I think I’ve ever had. It was so good, I forgot to take a photo until it was all gone!
